Not Just Any Dress

If dresses could talk, what stories might they tell? This compelling collection of short stories, essays, and poems features dress as the structural grounding for autobiographical accounts from women's lives in Western society. Often personal in nature, these "dress stories" point unfailingly to matters of social and cultural import. Some of the dresses described inhabit the popular imagination: the little girl dress, the communion dress, the school uniform, the prom dress, the wedding dress, the little black dress, and the burial dress. Beyond the semiotic, tactile, and visual aspects of the dresses themselves, the narratives delve into what dresses reveal about fundamental aspects of human experience: identity, embodiment, relationship, and mortality. Bought or made, then worn, forgotten, remembered, re-constructed, and re-interpreted, each dress offers a new glimpse into how we construct meaning in our daily lives, and how dresses serve to reinforce or resist social structures and cultural expectations.

It calms me down right away, the quietness and the proud look of it, nothing very bad could happen to you there, not with those kind men in their nice suits...'Meet Holly Golightly - a free spirited, lop-sided romantic girl about town. With her tousled blond hair and upturned nose, dark glasses and chic black dresses, Holly is a style sensation wherever she goes. Her apartment rocks to Martini-soaked parties and she plays hostess to millionaires and gangsters alike. Yet Holly never loses sight of her ultimate dream - to find a real life place like Tiffany's that makes her feel at home.Full of sharp wit and exuberant, larger-than-life characters which vividly capture the restless, madcap era of 1940s New York, Breakfast at Tiffany's will make you fall in love, perhaps for the first time, with a book.'A master writer ... makes the heart sing and the narrative fly' The New York Times'The most romantic story ever written' Alex James, Guardian'One of the century's greatest storytellers' Independent on SundayTruman Capote was born in New Orleans in 1925. Summer Crossing

Thought to be lost for over 50 years, here is the first novel by one of the greatest American writers of the 20th century. Fans of "Breakfast at Tiffany`s" and Capote`s short stories will be thrilled to read "Summer Crossing". Set in a heat-struck New York after World War II, "Summer Crossing" tells the story of the young socialite, Grady McNeil, who rebels against the dresses, debuts and eligible young bachelors her family have planned for her. As her parents make a summer crossing to France to check on their war-damaged villa, leaving Grady their Fifth Avenue apartment, she stokes up a secret affair she is having with a Jewish war veteran who works as a parking lot attendant. Grady makes a crossing of her own to an altogether more difficult social experience as she makes some dangerous choices which ultimately have disastrous consequences for herself and those who love her. Grady is a stylish and defiant heroine, drawn with masterful sympathy, and reminiscent of Holly Golightly. "Summer Crossing" offers insights into Truman Capote's developing literary style, but it is also an absorbing story in its own right, exhibiting the exquisitely balanced prose and insights into the psychology of human desire for which he became famous. Truman Capote wrote "Summer Crossing" aged barely twenty. He abandoned the manuscript in 1966 when he left his humble Brooklyn apartment - along with its contents - after the success of his journalistic novel "In Cold Blood". His housesitter rescued a cache of documents from the pavement outside the apartment and these eventually came up for auction in Sotheby's, New York, in 2004. The novel, which scholars and biographers had feared lost since Capote's death in 1984, was handwritten in four school notebooks, and heavily corrected in his hand.
